Great Zip line in Africa

I’ve done a much smaller, but still thrilling zip line up in Collingwood, Ontario:

3rd Person:

1st Person:

But this looks to be a very slick one-up on that experience. Holy cow!  The speed really does not come across in the “zipper’s” footage so I’m glad they had a camera in the landing area so you could see how fast you can go!

Laser Magician

In this era of special effects it’s getting harder and harder to tell reality from fantasy. Now, you not only have to evaluate the evidence but you need to render a judgment as to the trustworthiness of the folks providing the evidence.

But some things, I suppose, you just have to take on faith. In this case I’m willing to bet that the magician is just pretty skilled at his craft and that there was no help from the photographer.

I also LOVE how folks can embrace new technologies and then take them that next step forward…

Home Mad Music Video

Again my proclivity towards altered-time recordings leads me to this interesting video.

The most amazing thing to me is exactly how smooth the images on the posted bills are knowing how they were done manually (not CGI).

In the artist’s own words:

“Myself and a couple have friends have entered the above into the Modest Mouse video competition. Using green screen footage provided by the band we cut a simple music video. We then degraded the images and printed out each frame sequentially. (all 4133 of them) We then nailed each “shot” of 50-100 posters to various structures and posts.”

Amateur Animal Kingdom

When I watched this I wasn’t really expecting much. Unless you have a LOT of time to wait or you go ahead and stage some kind of confrontation (or maybe just edit a bunch of unrelated scenes together) you are seldom lucky enough to capture this kind of footage.

It’s a little long at 8 minutes, but take my word for it, this is well worth watching to the end. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything this socially complex before in a safari-style video.

It’s kind of like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” meets “Animal Kingdom” only with a Hollywood ending… of course I suppose that depends on who you’re rooting for… I won’t give it away.

The CollegeHumor version of the video mysteriously disappeared so I’ve “rediscovered” it on Youtube:

Adventures in Golfing

I went golfing at River Pines golf course on Friday with Glenn, David and Shuo. It turns out that River Pines’ championship course is still a fair bit above my skill level so my game was not what you might call “spectacular”. 🙂

Two items of note, however. Shuo and I were sitting in our cart at the 2nd hole when I happened to look up and saw a badly sliced ball curving gently towards us. I managed to get out a short warning before the ball whizzed between the two of us through the open front window and hit the back of the cart. That definitely gets the adrenaline flowing.

Then later, while hitting on the fairway of the 8th hole I struck the ball with my 3 iron and saw a curious flash while simultaneously feeling the club lighten dramatically.

It turns out that the iron had not simply separated from the shaft but the iron had actually broken off the shaft.

Here’s a closer look at the actual head

These are Prestwick px-7 clubs that I bought as a package a few years ago when I decided to become at least passable at the game. I figured I could invest in some nicer clubs when I had decided what I did and didn’t like with the current set.

Definitely in the “don’t like” column would be “falling apart”. 🙂

David has an eclectic collection of clubs that he’s assembled over the past few years that serve him very well, I’ll need to pick his brain for ideas for some new clubs. After watching his wonder clubs in action and Shuo’s new driver (easily the largest head I’ve ever seen used on a driver) I’m definitely convinced that the right clubs will help make the game that much more enjoyable.

“Currently Reading” items in the sidebar

In case you’re wondering if I have just simply forgotten the books over there. It actually does take quite a while for me to get through my books. About the only time I have to read is at night in bed just before going to sleep. I’m lucky if I can polish of 20 pages of a good novel on any given night.

And, of course, some of the drier science-fact items will take even longer than that.

Right now I’m deliberately reveling in “Judas Unchained” – I’m not going out of my way to read it very fast as I’m intent on stretching out the enjoyment for as long as I can. Mind you, at 1,234 pages it was bound to take a while in the first place.

Of course I don’t record any of the minor items that I read – Reader’s Digest, AOPA’s great magazine and the tremendous amount of information I get off of the Internet each day.

The “Suddenly Silver” – For Better or For Worse book has a lot of flashback items so is only partially interesting to me as I’ve read a LOT of the stuff before. I’ll probably just knock it off over the next week.
