Poll – Guys (and Gals) office shirts

Continuing the examination of “Affluenza” in North America, a comment in the last poll from Rose-Marie about ladies’ shoes got me thinking about mens’ shirts.

Office Shirts

I’m curious how many shirts the guys out there have. To narrow it down I’m only talking about shirts that you would wear to work in a business-casual office environment. So, of course, this should exclude t-shirts. But it should include even old and obsolete shirts that you have worn to the office in the past. The rule is, “if it’s not in the trash can right now, it counts”. Feel free to chuck some of those old shirts to skew your shirt count! 🙂

To try to compare apples to apples, for the ladies there are a lot of garments that can be warn in lieu of a shirt (dresses for example). So the challenge would include basically anything that would take the role of a shirt.

To my utter amazement and chagrin, I counted an even 80 (!) shirts in my closet. Considering that I haven’t bought myself a new shirt in well over a decade I can only assume that there is a plot afoot to quietly bury me under a mountain of clothing…

If you had asked me before I counted how many shirts I have I would have said maybe 20 or so.

  1. Marc,

    I would gladly give you a comparison on shirts vs blouses/dresses, however our current closet is divided into several area of the home due to more Reno’s. But if I had to estimate I would say JC=150, EC=100. As soon as we have the home back together I will post the real numbers.

    What was the comparison in your home?

  2. I daren’t venture into Mich’s closet. Even the most stalwart Indiana Jones wannabe would quail at the challenge of trying to get in there and then out again in one piece.

    There are obstacles and myriad little bits that come together to ensure that you will either break something or be broken before you return…

    Mich tells me she’ll get a count soon. I have a feeling all of those big bags that keep making their way to Goodwill may help bring the ratio down to an almost even ratio between hers and my shirts.

  3. oh no, this is what I feared you’d eventually get to. this and ball caps.

    after doing more work than I’ve done in a few months, I came up with approximately 75 with collars and 20 without (but which I’ve seen similar versions of in and around corporate canada). you didn’t say they had to fit, did you? if more fall out of hidden nooks, I’ll let you know.

  4. Marc,

    you may be surprised at what you may find in Mich’s closet. It might be red, cute and something you like! Don’t speak too soon – Mich will send it to good will with all your babbling about all her stuff. LOL

    love and peace to the men on this panel

  5. Okay… here’s the “official” count from the Murray closet… I have approx. 85 shirts and Shawn has 75… Can you believe it we almost have the same amount of shirts!!! Well, I of course have more clothes than him but I guess I don’t wear that many shirts… hum…

  6. Ok, I finally summed up enough nerve to walk into the closet armed with pen and paper for the count…

    Now keep in mind that I wear uniforms to work so I don’t really have “work shirts” so I just included everything….

    48=blouses, and long-sleeved t’s.
    14=t-shirts and tank tops.
    22=jackets, cardigans and blazers.

    There you have it folks.

  7. Now I didn’t count the jackets, cardigans or blazers… That would require another tour through the closet(s). Also, I have acquired 5 additional shirts since this poll was taken… So, I guess I am up to 89 shirts… hmm… I see a potential problem starting…

  8. Hmm, well, I’ve got a fair good number of shirts in my closet, too. But what do you think is a reasonable number? Of course it varies from person to person. Probably five or six is a good number for me. I can usually get a couple of days per shirt, if I wear a t-shirt underneath, though in the warmer months, I’ll go through a shirt a day.

  9. Those shirts will certainly complement your loincloth quite nicely.

    Remind me to send you a case of “Right Guard” for your birthday…
